Ann and I are approaching our wedding anniversary, and while its of course important to us, the marketing universe doesnt think its very significant. Your fifth anniversary is associated with something silver, 10th is aluminum or diamonds (hmm, which one do you think she would want?) and 20th is china or platinum. The 30th anniversary is signified by pearls or diamonds, and Im really glad I didnt know that last year when it actually was our 30th. Sorry, honey, statute of limitations and all that. Im just following the rules.
Were celebrating our 31st year of marriage next week, a number that just sort of hangs out there by itself and doesnt get a lot of attention. Not as lonely as the number one, as the song goes, but probably a close runner-up. I guess we can associate our own gift ideas with our 31st, like fruit, or hemp, or plastic. That might catch on. Forget the diamonds nothing says I love you like a piece of plastic fruit or a hemp handbag.
Or we can search to find deeper meaning to the number. Thirty-one is a prime number, which must make it special. Though further investigation shows there are 78,498 prime numbers under 1 million. Thirty-one doesnt seem so special anymore.
According to the always-reliable scientific field of numerology, the number 31 represents, practical, yet creative, energy. Sounds good to me. Thirty-one is also associated with sincerity, conscientiousness and dependability. Numerology goes even further to break down the essence of 31 to 3+1=4 and what that blend of numbers signifies. It involves complex mathematical formulas and the Langrangian Group Theorem, which I wont bore you with at the moment.
Im not sure why people put so much significance on numbers anyway, but were as guilty as anyone else about our favorites. When you play Lotto or Keno, do you use family birthdays to pick the sure winner? Same here. For us, 23 is a lucky number and has been in my family for years. Why? Who knows? But we were married on Feb. 23, and we always play 23 on the roulette wheel like it has some magical charm. We remember when the ball drops on 23, but conveniently forget all the times when it doesnt. The number 36 is a popular family number as well. Again, not sure why, but it is the last number on the roulette table. Why our family numbers seem to revolve around gambling Ill have to explore in a future piece.
I think the real significance of the number 31 is that its a pretty long time to be married, which makes it special all by itself. And next year well reach 32, which is 23 backwards Maybe a trip to Las Vegas is in our future?
