Two well-known writers made Glen Ellen their home. This year marks the 100th since the passing of Jack London. As such, the park is planning a multitude of events including the official anniversary celebration on Sept. 17. They are asking all of us to Save the Date!
Mary Frances Kennedy(M.F.K.) Fisher was most well known as a food writer during the 20th century. She died at her Glen Ellen cottage (built for her by David Bouverie) in June 1992 at the age of 84. This month you can enjoy learning more about her and the publication of her new book, The Theoretical Foot, at a discussion scheduled for March 12, 7 p.m., at Copperfield's Books in Healdsburg. This novel stands out in her legacy because it is fiction (only a small handful of her publications fit in this category) and because it is being published about seven decades after the manuscript was written.
Spring is nearly sprung and there is a lot of busy buzzing out at Dunbar Elementary!
Read Across America has been on-going at the school for the past five weeks and will culminate with a day of reading, pajamas, and popcorn on Friday, March 4. The students have recorded their reading minutes, which then translate into travel miles to propel The Cat in the Hat across America and to Dunbar. We hope the cat makes an appearance on that Friday! (Volunteer readers are welcome in classrooms that afternoon. RSVP with the front office, 935-6070.)
The 24th annual Fifth Grade Play Project (better known as the mellerdrama) is under way and in the capable hands of professional director Kate Kennedy. As always, the play performances will be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. They promise more news and photos soon.
Last month Dunbar held its first ever mother-son dance and it was a great success. The theme was Totally Awesome 80s, so how could they go wrong? This month is the annual father-daughter dance, but we suspect that next year the girls are going to want to break out of tradition, too, and choose a different activity such as laser tag, rock climbing, or bowling.
The annual Glen Ellen Fire Department Easter Egg Hunt will be held out at Dunbar on Saturday, March 26. In past years the egg hunt has been scheduled for 10 a.m., and ends at about 10:10, so don't be late! I did not get a confirmation on this year's time, so keep an ear out for the information coming directly from GEFD. Just following the egg hunt, join Dunbar's science and garden enrichment teachers out in the school's teaching garden for some coffee and snacks. Learn about the garden enhancement project, see the plans, browse the seedlings/goodies table, and let a student show you around. This annual Garden Anniversary Party, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., celebrates a commitment to hands-on garden curriculum, which has been an integrated feature at the school for nearly 30 years.
