The Sonoma Valley County Sanitation District (SVCSD) is seeking public comment on a draft Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) to increase the reliability of sanitation facilities during natural disasters.
Public input on the plan is being accepted during the month of November, when members of the public are encouraged to submit comments. Copies of the LHMP can be viewed online beginning Nov. 2 at www.sonomacountywater.org/svlhmp.
Public comments will be accepted until Dec. 2. A public hearing before the SVCSD Board of Directors is scheduled for Dec. 15. The SVCSD, which serves areas in the valley from Schellville to Glen Ellen, is operated by the Sonoma County Water Agency.
“The occurrence of natural disasters such as flooding, landslides, fires, and earthquakes – all relatively common in Sonoma County – can result in enormous cost to communities. The Local Hazard Mitigation Plan will form the foundation for a long-term strategy to reduce disaster losses,” said Water Agency and SVCSD Director Susan Gorin.
Mitigation measures in the Plan focus on increasing the reliability of sanitation facilities in order to protect public health, property, and natural resources. This plan is intended to provide a framework for decision-makers to reduce damages to lives, property, and the economy from future disasters through the use of risk-based analysis.
The SVCSD began operations in 1953 and serves 17,027 Equivalent Single-Family Dwellings within a 4,500-acre service area. The treatment plant has a design capacity of 3 million gallons per day and treats wastewater to tertiary treatment levels.
Comments on the LHMP should be submitted by email to spaulding@.cwa.ca.gov. or mailed to Jake Spaulding, c/o Sonoma County Water Agency, 404 Aviation Blvd., Santa Rosa, CA 95403. Copies of the LHMP will be available for viewing at the Sonoma County Water Agency offices and at the Sonoma branch of the Sonoma Valley Regional Library, 755 West Napa Street, Sonoma.
For questions about the LHMP contact Jake Spaulding at 524-8373 or spaulding@.cwa.ca.gov.
